Burnaby MLAs welcome B.C. government funds for local environment and public safety organizations

BURNABY Local New Democrat MLAs Anne Kang, Janet Routledge, Katrina Chen and Raj Chouhan are welcoming $128,000 in funding for three not-for-profit organizations in Burnaby. The organizations, which offer public safety and environmental programs, are receiving the funds through the Community Gaming Grants program.

The recipients of the community grant funding are the Action for Animals in Distress Society, the Wildlife Rescue Association of B.C., and the Royal Life Saving Society of Canada’s B.C. and Yukon Branch.

Across the province, over 145 public safety-related organizations are receiving more than $6.5 million this year. Through public safety programs, these groups provide emergency and lifesaving services including search and rescue activities, volunteer fire departments, emergency preparedness, community and restorative justice, and more.

Approximately 120 organizations in the environment sector are receiving $3.8 million across the province, providing people with opportunities to learn about and connect with nature, conducting wildlife rehabilitation programs and shelters for animals, helping us adapt to climate change, supporting local food systems, and more.

The Community Gaming Grants program provides up to $140 million to about 5,000 not-for-profit organizations in British Columbia each year.

Janet Routledge, MLA for Burnaby North

“Through these organizations, British Columbians generously donate their time to protecting people, animals and the environment. I’m proud that through Community Gaming Grants, British Columbians are supporting them right back.”

Anne Kang, MLA for Burnaby-Deer Lake

“Promoting water safety, sheltering stray and abandoned animals, and protecting wildlife are some of the small things that add up to big things. It’s the people in organizations like these in Burnaby that make us the caring society that we are.”

Raj Chouhan, MLA for Burnaby-Edmonds

“People express what they care about by volunteering and working for great causes. I’m proud that our Government can help facilitate their important work.”

Katrina Chen, MLA for Burnaby-Lougheed

“I’d like to give a big thanks to all the dedicated staff and volunteers in these Burnaby organizations. You do important work and I’m proud that our New Democrat Government can help you keep doing it.”
