Dear friends of Burnaby Gogos,
Today is Giving Tuesday and members of Burnaby Gogos have started a virtual walk from Ethiopia to South Africa, a distance of 17,000 km, to raise funds for the Stephen Lewis Foundation’s Grandmothers to Grandmothers Campaign.
Regrettably many Grandmothers to Grandmothers Campaign events, including our Pub Night planned for June 23rd, have been cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The resulting drop in funding will have a profound effect on the ground in Africa.
Funds raised by our group would have gone directly to the Grandmothers Campaign to be distributed to grassroots partner organizations that are the experts on the ground in 15 African countries. Among the clients in their care, are grandmothers, children orphaned by HIV & AIDS and people living with HIV, who are particularly vulnerable to COVID-19. As well, the organizations will be affected by the impact of closures and reduced services.
These organizations provide grandmothers in sub-Saharan Africa with support groups, access to healthcare, income generating projects, counselling for the children in their care, help to send their grandchildren to school, and so much more. We want to do our part to ensure these programs are able to continue.
Virtual walks engage people in safe and solitary activities and enable us to raise funds while maintaining social distance. Members of the Burnaby Gogos team will be undertaking individual fitness activities and will be logging kilometers walked and hours of activity.
